MTC's Past Projects

Meeting the Challenge, Inc. has received a wide range of disability-related projects from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research at the Department of Education, the Administration on Children and Families at the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office on Disability Employment Programs at the Department of Labor, and the National Science Foundation.

  • AbleAide - The AbleAide project was funded by the National Science Foundation in 1991 and 1992 through and Access Project grant. This project tested the theory that college students with disabilities failed to enter science and engineering fields due to the failure of collecge councilors to recommend appropriate assistive technology.
  • ChecRite - ChecRite was MTC's first SBIR project. It was funded by the Department of Education in 1991. The project conducted research on methods to aid individuals with mild mental retardation in writing checks.
  • ATM Sim - The ATM Sim project was Department of Education-funded SBIR that followed on to the ChecRite project. In this research, MTC evaluated methods for teaching individuals with mental retardation to use an ATM using simulations.
  • MenuCoach - MenuCoach used the food pyramid to assist individuals with metal retardation in developing healthy weekly menus and grocery shopping lists. This SBIR was funded through the Department of Education
  • PictureCoach/PocketCoach - This Department of Education-funded SBIR looked at methods to provide job training and job coaching services using technology. The project achieved significant success in the transition programs of local high schools and resulted in a commercial product.
  • Personal Assistance Services - This SBIR project was funded by the Administration on Children and Families at the Department of Health and Human Services. The project developed data on how individuals with disabilities preferred to receive personal assistance services as well as which services were most needed. The Phase II effort set up several prototype service delivery points through independent living centers.
  • Talking Menus - The Talking Menus SBIR project evaluated methods for delivering restaurant menus and other non-sequential information to individuals who are blind or have low vision. The prototype device using a recordable memory chip and easy navigation was tested at several local restaurants. The project was funded by the Department of Education.
  • Transition AbleAide - Transition AibleAide used the basic concepts learned in the AibleAide project to develop means to assist high school students with disabilities in their transition to the workplace. This SBIR was funded by the Department of Education.
  • AccessInfo - The AccessInfo project examined methods for using the web to disseminate information about the accessibility of tourism destination. The project was funded by the Department of Education through their Field Initiate Program. The system was field tested at the 1999 World Downhill Ski Campionships in Vail, Colorado and with the Colorado Ocean Journey in Denver, Colorado.
  • Workforce Recruitment Program - The Office on Disability Employment Policy at the Department of Labor contracted a team of MTC and HirePotential to develop an online resource CD to allow employeers to review resumes of college students for internship positions.
